FAQ
The lowest fares on SJ NORD train tickets are available at Entur.
Other selling points, such as the Vy app, charge and extra purchase fee everytime you purchase an SJ NORD ticket.
That is why we recommend that you purchase your tickets at Entur.
Train ticket prices fluctuate based on market forces of demand and supply, similar to air travel.
Tickets for high-demand periods and popular departures will generally be more expensive. However, during the low season or if you purchase your ticket early, you are more likely to find lower fares. This is why we recommend planning your journeys in advance. Ticket sales open 120 days before departure.
Seat reservation is available in our long-haul routes in the Dovre and Nordland railways, as well as our regional routes on the Røros and the Rauma railways. You can reserve a seat when you book your ticket on the Entur app or the Entur website.
Our local trains do no have available seat reservation.
Social discounts for seniors, students, children, and military recruits are set by the Railway Directorate, which is part of the Ministry of Transport. These discounts are part of a publicly subsidized scheme and therefore only apply to tickets in the Standard category.
For tickets in the Premium and Premium Pluss categories, which offer extra comfort and services, these discounts do not apply. This means that the prices here are the same for all travelers.
Pets are not allowed to travel in Premium Pluss. We understand that you wish to travel with your four-legged friend, and we want to make the journey as comfortable as possible for all our passengers. Therefore, we offer the option to travel with dogs in our Standard cars, where you can enjoy the trip together.
To maintain the unique and calm atmosphere that our travelers appreciate in Premium Pluss, we have chosen to limit passengers with pets to our Standard cars, where you can still enjoy a comfortable journey together.
Guide dogs and service dogs that are on duty, equipped with a harness or vest, may travel in Premium Plus. They are also welcome in all cars on the train. The same applies to dogs with membership in Norwegian Rescue Dogs. This is because they are specially trained to support individuals with disabilities, and their presence is crucial for the owner to carry out daily tasks safely and independently.
All Flexible tickets, whether Standard, Premium, or Premium Pluss, can be canceled right up until the departure time.
If you have purchased a Non-flexible ticket, unfortunately, it is not possible to change the departure or cancel the ticket for a refund.
If you are traveling within AtB’s zone A in Trøndelag (from Hovin in the south, Skatval in the north, and Hegra in the east), you should use AtB’s period ticket or single ticket. This ticket must be purchased through AtB in the gray app and is valid on the train.
If your journey starts or ends outside zone A, you will need to combine your ticket with an SJ NORD ticket. Read more about our collaboration with AtB here.
Unfortunately we do not accept cash when purchasing train tickets aboard. According to the Norwegian Ministry of Justice and Public Security a train does not constitute a ‘sales outlet’ and thus, there is no right to pay with cash aboard. However you may pay using cash in the café compartment, during all day-time departures. This does not apply on the night train.
You can bring up to 30 kilograms of luggage, distributed across a maximum of 3 items. It is also allowed to bring a stroller, bicycle, and other special luggage on board.
Yes, but there is limited space for bicycles on board the train.
For departures with seat reservations, a separate bike ticket must be pre-booked via the ‘bike’ option when purchasing your ticket. This guarantees a spot for your bike on board.
For departures without seat reservations, you can show up directly and find a spot for your bike, provided there is space on the train. It is always the conductor who decides if there is available space for your bike on board. The number of available bike spots depends on the number of passengers, wheelchairs, and strollers on the train.
In the Entur app and on entur.no, you can find an estimate of how full we expect the train to be. If the departure appears to be full, we encourage you to consider a different time. We cannot guarantee space for your bike, but the chances increase if there are fewer passengers.
Yes, you can receive assistance on board and at boarding and alighting.
If you need assistance on the platform, either for boarding or alighting, you must inform SJ NORD’s customer service as early as possible ahead of your journey. The same applies if you wish to bring a wheelchair on board.
If you need assistance at the train station, please inform Bane NOR as soon as possible ahead of your journey.
You can also receive assistance on the train from an escort. Escorts for individuals who are deaf-blind and have identification from the competence center for the deaf-blind (green card) travel for free. Escorts for individuals traveling with a companion pass are entitled to a discount when purchasing a ticket.
We do not offer travel assistance for children traveling alone. The staff on board the trains are unfortunately not able to take care of unaccompanied children, so it is important that the children are mature enough to manage on their own. The staff also have no legal obligation to provide special care for your child during the journey.
Since there is no minimum age for children traveling alone, it is up to parents to determine whether a child is capable of traveling alone, considering that unforeseen events can occur.
Remember that children must be able to show a valid ticket for the entire journey. A valid ticket does not include photos of a valid ticket.
To receive the key to your sleeping compartment, you must check in.
At Oslo S, Trondheim S, and Bodø stations, you should check in for the sleeping compartment in the departure hall before boarding. The check-in area is clearly marked with a sign reading ‘Check-in Sleeping Compartment.’ Here, you will also meet one of our friendly colleagues who will guide you further.
If you arrive late for check-in in the departure hall or if you come from another station, check-in will take place in the onboard café, close to departure time.
It is important to check in after you board the train. If the compartment is not checked in within half an hour, it will be made available to other passengers.
If your train is significantly delayed or canceled, you may be entitled to a refund and compensation. What you are entitled to will vary depending on whether you are traveling with a long-distance train or a regional train.
